After our second mini tour finished in November 2012, we wanted to record the band for promotional purposes, so the quintet comprising Gary Smulyan, pianist Leon Greening, bassist Dominic Howles, drummer Matt Home and myself recorded a demo at Dave O’Higgins’ studio over the course of an afternoon.
I was thrilled to have two of my own tunes; Low Blow Boogaloo and Long Haul recorded. The others were the great Thad Jones’ contrafact Evol Deklaw Ni, on Love Walked In, geddit?, a great up tempo Pepper Adams composition called Joy Road, then we finished off with a nice medium tempo blues by Red Garland entitled Red’s Good Groove.
